It is fascinating. Pain is one of a small group of things that is most highly influenced by the placebo effect, which fits well with the research findings cited here. Also, worthy of note (and rather incredible) is how patients with phantom limb pain can be cured by using mirrors to trick the brain into momentarily thinking the missing limb is being moved into a different position.
